They have five children, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is an anointed man of God and is well-known for his powerful preaching of the Gospel and pastoral teaching.
Superintendent Toliver has served in the Church of God in Christ ministry for over 70 years. His Christian walk began in Jefferson, Texas on March 12, 1946. He was called to preach at the age of 13 and received his minister’s license in 1950. In 1956, after being honorably discharged from the United States Army, he moved from the state of Texas to San Francisco, California. Having been ordained an elder in 1966, he served as pastor of two churches in San Francisco prior to moving to Sacramento, California in 1972. After visiting several churches in Sacramento, Superintendent Toliver, along with his wife and children, joined Progressive COGIC in 1973 under the leadership of Pastor J. E. Copeland. In 1974, he was appointed Assistant Pastor and to serve on the Trustee Board.
After many faithful years of service to Pastor Copeland, as Joshua was to Moses, God saw fit to elevate Elder Bennie L. Toliver over His people once again. On April 2, 2005, California Northwest Ecclesiastical Jurisdictional Prelate, Bishop W. W. Hamilton officially appointed Elder Bennie L. Toliver to pastor of Progressive COGIC.
Superintendent Toliver is learned through experience and education in biblical doctrine. He is a graduate of the North Carolina College of Theology where he received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in theology. He was one of five local pastors to receive the Sacramento Observer Newspaper 2008 Annual Glory Award, in recognition of the contributions made by Northern California’s spiritual leaders for their tireless efforts to provide support for the community.
In April 2010, Superintendent Toliver traveled to the Victory Life Bible Church Holy Convocation in Lagos, Nigeria. While there he ministered to thousands of God’s people during the convocation and in local villages. Several lives and ministries were transformed as many received fresh fire and unction needed to carry them on in their various ministries and above all, there was salvation of souls of many people.
